- Induction:
- 2018
Earnel Durden was a groundbreaking role model at Oregon State as one of the first African American student-athletes ever at the university.
Durden was a standout wingback for head coach Tommy Prothro helping the team to 21 victories during his three-year varsity career. He was among the key stars of the team that played in the 1957 Rose Bowl as he was for the following year’s team that was prohibited from playing New Year’s Day due to the Pacific Coast Conference’s league policy “no repeat rule.”
Durden later enjoyed a lengthy NFL coaching career with the Rams, Chargers, and Oilers.
