CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State dropped a 2-0 decision to 20th-ranked UCLA in Pacific-10 women's soccer Friday afternoon as the Bruins' Staci Duncan scored twice at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. OSU (8-8-1 overall, 1-5-0 Pacific-10) plays its final home game of the season Sunday when it meets 10th-ranked Southern California in a game kicking off at noon, that contest will be followed by a game between OSU's men's team and Cal Poly.
On Friday, UCLA (13-3-1, 5-1-1) managed both its goals - one in each half - off counterattacks against the Beavers.
"We got caught very much on the break on both goals," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "We had a decent possession on the first goal but they got a long ball out, and their player was able to flip it in. On the second goal, we had the play upfield but gave the ball away just into their half, they attacked quickly and got a one-on-one."
Duncan's first goal came in the 35th minute. She gathered in a long downfield pass from Jessica Winton and dribbled down the center of the field, then shot past OSU goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease from 12 yards out.
The second goal was scored in the 61st minute. Duncan gained possession of the ball and dribbled in from the left wing, eventually shooting from 10 yards out and tucking the ball inside the far post.
The Beavers managed several threats of their own and were outshot just 9-5 in the game, but OSU couldn't find the back of the net.
"We got the ball in their box quite a bit," Fennah said. "It was fairly even, stat-wise. Now the key for us is to come out and play with the same intensity Sunday versus Southern California. We need to learn from our mistakes, but we've done a pretty good job of that all year."
