CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State saw its three-game women's soccer winning streak come to an end Friday afternoon as the Beavers lost to California 2-0 in the Pacific-10 opener for both teams. OSU (7-4-1 overall, 0-1-0 Pacific-10) saw the Golden Bears (8-3-1, 1-0-0) score twice in the second half to take the win at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.
"Overall, it was a good all-around performance," Oregon State head coach Steve Fennah said. "But we're in a position now that we're not content with that. We want a good performance and a win. But this is a step - we'll win these type of games soon."
The Beavers were outshot 17-6, but in a scoreless first half the Bears had just a 5-4 edge in shots. Cal pressed the attack in the second half, though, to earn its two goals. In the 51st minute, Stephanie Strocco scored off an assist by Stacey Mallison to make it 1-0. Then, in the 65th minute, it was Amy Balavac scoring off an assist by Laura Schott for a 2-0 Bear lead.
"We did okay at times, but our possession of the ball wasn't what it's been against good teams," Fennah said. "Defensively, we made a couple of small errors and they cost us. We didn't pick up on their first goal very well, and Cal has three good forwards - we've got to take care of people in back."
The Beavers got seven saves from goalkeeper Elizabeth Pease, including several spectacular stops that kept OSU within striking distance of the Bears for most of the game.
OSU will be at home again on Sunday, meeting Stanford in another Pacific-10 game. The game is set for approximately 2 p.m., following the men's game between Oregon State and Gonzaga that kicks off at noon.
