SPOKANE, Wash. - BreeAnna Jolin picked up a hat trick on Wednesday afternoon, scoring Oregon State's first three goals in a 4-0 win over Gonzaga in non-league women's soccer. The Beavers (1-1-0 overall) now return home to meet 18th-ranked Virginia at 5 p.m. Friday and take on Wisconsin at 2 p.m. Sunday.
At Gonzaga (0-1-0), Jolin had a pair of goals in the first half, then added her final score less than 15 minutes after intermission. It was OSU's first hat trick since Jeanette Scotti scored all of the Beavers' goals in a 3-1 home win over Sacramento State on Sept. 29, 1996.
"She had a super afternoon," Oregon State head coach Steve Fennah said of Jolin. "She got a lovely through ball for a goal and tucked it in very well, then her confidence was high ... we played very well today, we knocked the ball around well.
"It was actually a game between two teams who have improved considerably from this time a year ago. Gonzaga was much stronger and much more organized, and that's a credit to their new coaching staff. We just played the ball around very well."
Goalkeepers Elizabeth Pease and Jerika Duran both played a half for Oregon State in the combined shutout. Pease had to make just one save and Duran four as OSU outshot the Bulldogs 22-8.
"We gave each of them a half, and they both looked comfortable," Fennah said of the keepers. "They distributed the ball well, they organized at the back and it was nice to see them being vocal out there."
Jolin started the scoring in the 21st minute, taking a lead pass from Morgan Crabtree that left Jolin wide open and her shot beat GU keeper Gina Legaz. In the 43rd minute, it was Katie Henderson assisting on a Jolin shot that beat Legaz to the far post for OSU's 2-0 halftime lead.
Jolin's third goal came in the 60th minute on an unassisted score as she got behind the Bulldog defense. Dante Lipfert added the Beavers' final goal in the 87th minute off an assist by Beth Thomason.
"All three of our forwards are playing well - Sunny (Miller), Dante and Bree," Fennah said. "And we had some nice through balls form all our midfield players, with Coral Slater and Leila Kaady in particular doing a nice job. Katie Henderson had a super game wide left, and Christy Castalanelli stepped in well on defense today.
"The good thing was, everybody played and came in and made some nice contributions."
