Beavers Settle For 1-1 Tie

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State had the majority of scoring chances but had to settle for a 1-1 tie with Arizona in Pacific-10 women's soccer Friday afternoon on Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. OSU (6-6-1 overall, 0-0-1 Pacific-10) outshot the Wildcats 24-8, but could manage only Ann Marie Fallow's second-half goal.
The Beavers will be at home Sunday afternoon, meeting Arizona State at 2 p.m. on Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.
On Friday, OSU came back with an energy that had been lacking in Sunday's 3-0 loss to Pepperdine. That resulted in Oregon State dominating play but the Beavers couldn't convert their opportunities.
"We had good intensity," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "It's a game we should have won. We had plenty of opportunities and shots on goal, but their keeper made some good saves. Especially early - we had some opportunities that really could have changed the complexion of the game."
Instead, it was Arizona striking first. In the 26th minute, Liz Bartlett broke away down the left side and shot from 10 yards out, it went past Oregon State goalkeeper Jerika Duran and just inside the far post for a 1-0 lead.
OSU finally answered just after halftime. In the 46th minute, Christy Castalanelli crossed the ball to the left, it was deflected and Fallow booted it back by UA goalkeeper Inger Airheart toward the far post and the ball rolled in to make it 1-1.
"I can't say I was disappointed with our effort," Fennah said. "We knocked the ball around well. Our problem was our decision-making in the box. Sometimes we were looking for our strike a bit early when we could have taken some time or taken another touch. But give Arizona credit, they came out and battled."
Duran finished with three saves for the Beavers, including some key stops. Arizona's Shannon Monti had three saves in the first half and Airheart had six saves playing the rest of the way.
