CORVALLIS, Ore. - Dante Lipfert scored in the final minutes of regulation, then again midway through the second overtime to hand Oregon State a 2-1 win over Boise State in non-league women's soccer Sunday afternoon at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. The Beavers (5-4-0 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) ended a three-game losing streak with the victory, OSU now hosts Portland State on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Sunday's win over Boise State (3-4-1, 0-0-0 Big West) ended two weeks of offensive frustration for Oregon State, which had lost three straight games by 1-0 scores on goals in the final minutes or in overtime. That drought spilled over into Sunday's game, as OSU outshot the Broncos 32-6 but couldn't find the back of the net until Lipfert's goal in the 88th minute.
"I think the first thing we hit was my life insurance policy," OSU head coach Steve Fennah joked after watching his team produce a long succession of scoring chances after halftime. Of OSU's shots, 13 were on goal, two more hit the post, another hit the crossbar and a good portion of the remainder didn't miss the goal mouth by more than a few feet.
"It becomes a mental deal," Fennah said of the scoring slump. "It weighs heavily as you're looking to finish ... what was so pleasing was that we kept playing throughout the game. We didn't just bump the ball into the box, we knocked the ball around and kept getting good chances. I've never seen us with that number of strikes close to the target."
Lipfert finally tied the game at 1-1 when she gained a loose ball and shot from the left side to the far post with just 2:17 remaining in regulation. That took a load of pressure off the Beavers, who had been playing from behind for nearly 80 minutes after an early BSU goal.
After each team managed just one shot in the first overtime, OSU again pressed the attack in the second extra period. In the 113th minute, Morgan Crabtree dribbled down the left side and then shot a cross right to Lipfert, Lipfert headed it just inside the near post and out of the reach of BSU goalkeeper Lindsay Vandenberg for the win.
"Dante had two good goals, and that was a great run by Morgan," Fennah said. "And we got a great performance by Stephanie Lucas up front ... our intensity level was up, and that's a credit to (assistant coaches) Heidi Slaymaker and Linus Rhode because they did some things this week that helped us there."
Boise State had gone in front 1-0 in the ninth minute. Brittany Zoellner came out of a scramble and dribbled left to the top of the goalkeeper's box, her shot sailed past OSU starting goalkeeper Jerika Duran and into the goal near the far post.
Elizabeth Pease moved into the OSU net at halftime and recorded 67 scoreless minutes to help the Beavers to the win. BSU's Vandenberg made 11 saves in the loss.
