CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State got its 20th win of the season, then got a look at the first baseball under the lights in the 96-year history of Goss Stadium at Coleman Field on Saturday. The Beavers beat Hawai'i-Hilo 10-2 in the first game of a non-league doubleheader, the second game went into the evening before it was suspended by rain in the top of the eighth inning with OSU leading 10-9.
OSU (20-12 overall, 3-3 Pacific-10) and Hawai'i-Hilo (9-31-1) will complete the suspended game on Sunday at 1 p.m., then play their regularly-scheduled game. Sunday's action can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).
The Beavers' win in the opener included Brian Barden going 2-for-4 with a homer, Seth Pietsch going 2-for-4 with a homer, Tom Creighton going 3-for-4 and Andy Jarvis going 2-for-3 with a double. OSU had 16 hits in the game, with 11 different players collecting a hit.
Barden had also collected four hits in the second game by the time it was suspended. By the end of Saturday's play, he had moved into second place on OSU's all-time list of career hits leaders (202, passing Joe Gerber's 201 from 1997-2000) and career total bases leaders (310, passing Ken Bowen's 303 from 1984-87). His four RBIs on the day gave him sole possession of third place on the Beavers' list of career leaders (135) and his home run tied him gave him sole possession of sixth on that career list (22).
"I'm feeling more comfortable," said Barden, who has emerged from a midseason slump to deliver 22 hits in OSU's last 11 games. "I'm just confident right now, I'm starting to feel it at the plate a little more. It's starting to come back to me."
Ben Rowe pitched a career-high seven innings to earn the win, allowing two runs on six hits while not walking a hitter and striking out two as he improved his record to 5-3. Don Stykel finished the game with two scoreless innings of one-hit relief.
OSU went up 3-0 on run-scoring singles by Kerisi Reynolds, Barden and Jason McBride in the third inning, then got solo homers from Barden and Pietsch and a run-scoring triple by Aaron Mathews in a four-run fifth to go in front 7-2. Pietsch added an RBI single in the sixth, then in the eighth Wick Udy singled home a run and Jarvis doubled home another.
The start of the game was delayed an hour by rain, and there was a 42-minute rain delay in the top of the eighth inning. The second game started shortly before 5 p.m., at 5:34 p.m., with Will Hudson batting in the bottom of the second inning, the lights flickered on around the diamond and gradually took effect as the skies darkened.
"It was still kind of light, but it was getting pretty dark," Jarvis said. "Then they flipped those on, and it still looked like daylight out there. As far as today goes, having the lights was great."
OSU has not yet announced the date and time of what will be the first regularly-scheduled night game at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The recent installation of the lights was made possible by a gift from Bert and Shirley Babb.
