Errors Doom Beavers In 14-7 Loss

CORVALLIS, Ore. - A pair of Oregon State errors led to eight unearned Arizona runs as the Beavers lost 14-7 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. OSU (17-9 overall, 2-3 Pac-10) had taken a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, but dropped flyballs on plays that could have ended innings led to three game-tying runs in the sixth and then five more runs in the eighth for the Wildcats (15-11-1, 4-1).
OSU and Arizona wrap up their series Sunday at 1 p.m. and the game can be heard on KEJO-AM (1240) and www.osubeavers.com. It will be the final day of Little League Weekend, sponsored by Reser's Fine Foods, with all youth baseball and softball players being admitted for $2 if they wear their uniform to the ballpark.
The Beavers' home game against Sonoma State that had been set for Monday has been cancelled, so Oregon State's next action after Sunday's game will come against Stanford on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.
On Saturday, a sun-warmed crowd of 1,512 saw the Beavers take the upper hand with a three-run fifth inning for that 6-3 lead, getting run-scoring singles from Chris Campos and Tony Calderon with the final run crossing the plate an error by UA shortstop Jason Donald. OSU, which had played errorless defense to that point, committed four errors the rest of the way and didn't come up with another hit until it trailed 14-6.
"It's disappointing because I didn't feel we played the way we're capable of playing," said OSU head coach Pat Casey, whose team also lost 4-3 on Friday night. "We played well for 25 games and we come out new and get great crowds and a great atmosphere, and we have not played well. We haven't done the things you have to do, and today we really made mistakes. Now we'll find out what we're made of on Sunday."
It appeared OSU would get out of the top of the sixth inning still ahead 6-3 when Pat Reilly popped up to short leftfield and Calderon, the Beaver shortstop, settled under the ball. It popped out of his glove, though, allowing one run to score and make it 6-4.
"I took my eye off the ball at the last second, right as it hit my glove," Calderon said. "I thought I had it, but it hit the end of my glove and popped out. That's why you've got to look it in every time ... it definitely changed the momentum of the game."
After OSU reliever Kyle Aselton walked Richard Mercado, Jeff Van Houten grounded past the mound just to the right of second base. Second baseman Chris Kunda got to the ball but didn't knock it down for another error, allowing another run to score; then John Hardy singled back up the middle to drive in the tying run before Aselton finally got a fielder's choice to end the inning.
Arizona got the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh inning off lefthander Nathan Pendley, as Bill Rhinehart led off with a double and scored on Trevor Crowe's two-out, bad-hop single past third baseman Shea McFeely for a 7-6 advantage.
In the eighth, the Wildcats picked up two more earned runs against Jonah Nickerson and Jake McCormick but it seemed OSU would still trail just 9-6 when Kevin Joslyn got Crowe to pop up behind first base with two out and the bases loaded; OSU first baseman Andy Jenkins dropped that ball, though, allowing two runs to score and the Wildcats picked up three more in the frame after that.
"If we'd played like that for the first 25 games, you could expect it," Casey said. "We've got some guys who are pretty resilient and pretty tough, and today I thought we just didn't execute in some situations and we didn't make some plays we need to make. Obviously, they took advantage of every mistake we made."
Chris Campos and Calderon were both 2-for-4 for OSU, while McFeely had his hitting streak end at seven games. Campos, an outfielder, was also the last of the eight Beavers to go to the mound, pitching a one-two-three ninth inning and striking out two.
Saturday's crowd marked the fifth time in eight home games that OSU has drawn at least 1,000 fans to Goss Stadium at Coleman Field this spring. OSU is averaging 1,121 fans per home game this season.
