PULLMAN, Wash. - Jenna Richardson scored her fifth goal of the season in the 35th minute which proved to be enough, as the 19th-ranked Oregon State women's soccer team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 1-0 win over Pacific-10 opponent Washington State Friday afternoon in Pullman, Wash.
"The game was very intense and was a battle for the full 90 minutes," Oregon State women's soccer head coach Linus Rhode said following the match. "You have to give Washington State a lot of credit. They came out, were very organized and made our lives difficult out there today."
True freshman Richardson gave the Beavers (12-1-1 overall, 4-0-0 Pac-10) the early 1-0 lead when she dribbled the ball past two defenders on the right side of the field, turned and drove the ball into the back of the net from eight yards out past the Cougar goal keeper Ariana Byrd. It was Richardson's fifth goal of the season which moves her into a tie for second on the team this season.
The Oregon State defense answered the call again Friday when they held the Cougars (6-10-0, 1-4-0) to only eight shots, only two of those coming on goal. Oregon State junior keeper Colleen Boyd added to her already school record number of shutouts Friday, with her 10th of the season.
The Beavers are halfway through their most difficult road trip in Pac-10 Conference play when it comes to the actual travel. They bussed to Pullman on Thursday and will bus from Pullman to Seattle on Saturday before taking on Washington on Sunday. Following Sunday's match against the Huskies, they will then bus back to Corvallis from Seattle.
"It's not a very easy road trip," Rhode said. "Credit our team for getting the job done. They withstood the pressure and fought hard in a very hostile environment. We're happy with the win but now we need to refocus for Washington on Sunday."
Sunday's match against Washington in Seattle at Husky Soccer Stadium is set for a 12 p.m. kickoff. Live stats can be found at osubeavers.com with live video provided at gohuskies.com.
