LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Oregon State women's soccer team lost 1-0 to No. 3 UCLA in a hard fought battle between two top-25 teams today.
“Obviously we are not happy with the result,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “I think that our girls played a good game today. There are definitely a few things we can build on for the upcoming games.”
The Bruins struck early in the 17th minute of the game when a UCLA forward shot the ball near the endline and made the score 1-0. Besides the goal, most of the game was a midfield battle between the two teams.
“There weren't really a lot of opportunities at either end,” Rhode said. “We had a few opportunities though that we needed to capitalize on.”
The Bruins outshot the beavers 5-2 in the first half, but goalkeeper Colleen Boyd was strong in goal and came up with two big saves to keep the Beavers in the game.
“There was a sequence of plays where she had to make two big saves in a row,” Rhode said. “It is games like this, where the game is tight, it is going to be important to make plays like that. Overall she played a great game, as did the rest of the team.”
Like the first half, the second half was also played mostly in the midfield. There were only three total shots taken in the second half between the two teams and only one corner kick was awarded.
The best scoring opportunity in the second half for the Beavers was a shot from Chelsea Buckland in the 54th minute, but the shot was denied by the Bruin goalkeeper.
The Beavers will return to action when they take on Arizona State Friday Oct. 7 in Tempe, Ariz. at 7:00 p.m.
