CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 19 Oregon State women's soccer team defeated the California Golden Bears today 3-0 during a rainy afternoon at Paul Lorenz Field. The Beavers improved their record to 13-5-1 overall and 7-3-0 in conference play.
This was the first win against California for the Beavers since 1995. The other win against California came during the 1994 season.
“Today's win was a great result, especially after the game we played on Friday against Stanford,” head coach Linus Rhode said. “Obviously, that was a very hard fought match and that takes a lot out of the players physically and mentally. And to be able to come out here today and play how we did is really fun to watch and shows that we have a lot of character.”
Chelsea Buckland put the Beavers on the board in the 27th minute. Brittney Oljar got a shot off, and the goalkeeper deflected the ball to Buckland's feet for her to finish into the back of the net and give the Beavers a 1-0 lead.
Erin Uchacz almost gave Oregon State another point when she blasted a shot just wide of the post in the 35th minute. The Beavers outshot the Golden Bears 7-6 in the first half.
It wasn't long into the second half when the Beavers were awarded a penalty kick in the 48th minute of the game. Melinda Ingalls stepped up to take it and converted the PK to notch her third goal of the season.
California tried to answer in the 55th minute of the game with a shot from outside the 18-yard box, but Colleen Boyd was there to make another big diving save for the Beavers. Boyd ended the game with four saves.
“Our defense, which I call our back-five, are outstanding and played outstanding today,” Rhode said. “They had to do a lot of defending on Friday and to come out here today and blank the Bears for a shutout was fantastic.”
Buckland added her second goal of the day in the 87th minute to give the Beavers a 3-0 lead. Buckland received the ball out wide and blasted a beautiful shot far post from 20-yards out to finish the game for the Beavers. That was Buckland's 10th goal of the season.
The Beavers will return to action when they host Oregon as part of the Civil War Series, presented by the Northwest Ford Dealers and PacificSource Health Plans. The game against Oregon will also be senior night for Boyd, Ingalls, Ashley Seal, Ashley Folsom and Brittany Galindo. The game is set to kick-off at 7:00 p.m.
