Shaw Scores Game Winner in Overtime Against Butler

CORVALLIS, Ore - Haley Shaw scored the game winning goal in overtime against the Butler Bulldogs to improve the Beavers record 2-1-0 Sunday. This was Shaw's first goal of the season.
The Beavers didn't need much time to find the back of the net once the game went into overtime. Oregon State worked the ball up the middle until they found Shaw in the 18-yard-box. After beating a defender, she drove the ball left-footed into the upper near post for the game winning goal.
“I mean it was a game winner in the first period of overtime,” Head Coach Linus Rhode said. “It was kind of a grind today. “It was the second game on a long road trip. We had them under pressure for most of the game and creating chances and we just keep grinding away until we finally put one away. The girls worked extremely hard.”
Oregon State came out strong in the first minutes of play having a corner and two shots just in the first five minutes, but the Bulldogs struck first in the 10th minute making the score 1-0 early in the game.
Oregon State fought back and answered with a goal of their own from senior Melinda Ingalls in the 35th minute to tie the game 1-1.
“It was a similar play to Haley's goal,” Rhode said. “We won the ball in the midfield and Melinda made a deep run into the 18-yard-box to finish the goal off nicely.”
The Beavers started the second half with intensity when Jessica Niewoehner's shot in the 46th minute was denied by the post. The Beavers had another opportunity to take the lead when Erin Uchacz's attempt was saved by the Bulldogs goalkeeper in the 56th minute. The two teams fought to a draw at the end of regulation to take the game into overtime.
The Oregon State Beavers will return to action September 2, when they travel to Eugene, Ore. for the University of Oregon Nike Tournament. They are set to play Santa Clara at 4:00 p.m. PT on September 2 and New Hampshire at 10:00 a.m. PT on September 4.
