PORTLAND, Ore -
The Oregon State women's soccer team lost to the No. 24 Portland Pilots today in a heartbreaking overtime defeat where the Pilots scored in the first minute of overtime to win 2-1.
"Obviously, it was a heartbreaker, but as always we are going to learn from each game and I think that today we played a very good game," head coach Linus Rhode said. "Portland is always going to be a tough team and so we just have to keep working at it and keep improving."
The Beavers got on the scoreboard first in the 16th minute of the first half when Justyne Freud took a free kick from half field and sent it deep into the box. The Pilots' keeper came out to contest the ball and Brittany Galindo headed the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season.
Haley Shaw almost added to the score in the 27th minute when a ball was played over the Pilot defense and she found herself one-on-one with a defender in the 18-yard box, but she shot the ball high over the cross bar.
The Pilots had a chance to equalize the score in the 28th minute when a Pilot forward slipped through the Beaver defense, but Colleen Boyd came up big in goal to make the one-on-one save.
Portland tied the game 1-1 with six minutes left in the first half when a Pilot took a shot from the top of the 18-yard box to make the game even. Minutes later the Pilots got a free-kick right outside the box, but Boyd made another diving save to keep the score tied going into halftime.
In the second half, the Pilots put pressure on Boyd late in the half, but she answered making several big saves to keep the Beavers in the game. In the 74th minute, the Pilots had a give-and-go in the box and a point blank range shot on Boyd, but Boyd came up big with a great save to keep the game 1-1. She finished with 4 saves in the game.
"Colleen made some great saves and she played awesome today," Rhode said. "She is the kind of keeper that shows up for big games and plays great."
One of the dangerous players for the Beavers today was Freud. As the primary free kick taker on the team, she sent six deep balls into the box, making dangerous plays against the Pilots.
After playing out the rest of regulation, the Beavers and Pilots headed into the first overtime, but Portland struck quickly in the first minute of overtime, winning the game 2-1.
The Oregon State Beavers will return to action Friday Sept. 16 when they host the Oregon State Nike Invitational. The Beavers will take on Florida International at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and UC Davis at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday Sept. 18.
