OSU gets goals from duo of Miller and Richardson to notch its tenth win of the season
BOULDER, Colo. – Lead by goals from Megan Miller and Jenna Richardson, the Oregon State women's soccer team notched its tenth win of the season, defeating Colorado 2-0 Saturday on its home turf. OSU used a first half goal by Miller and a second half score from Richardson along with two clutch saves by freshman Sammy Jo Prudhomme to earn its second conference victory. With the win, the Beavers improved to 10-4-1 on the year and 2-3-1 in Pac-12 play. The defeat dropped the Buffaloes to 6-6-3 overall and 0-5-1 within the conference.
The Beavers struck first in their matchup in the mountains when in the 20th minute Miller took a nice cross at midfield from junior Jessica Niewoehner and then shot it into the top right corner of the goal past CU keeper Annie Brunner. The score gave Oregon State an early 1-0 lead and Miller her fifth goal of the year, propelling her into the team lead past Richardson.
OSU would maintain that one point edge going into halftime in large part because of the steady hands of Prudhomme, who made a diving save with seconds remaining off of a shot by Buffalo striker Shaye Marshall. That blazing shot was the only one the freshman keeper would face in the first 45 minutes of play as OSU came out in the second half looking to extend its 1-0 advantage.
Linus Rhode's crew would do just that in the 64th minute of play as Richardson, eager to regain her team lead for goals scored, used some fancy footwork to put the ball in the net from about the top of the 18-yard mark. It was her fifth score of the season and gave her team a commanding 2-0 lead.
From that point on the OSU defense was locked in, only allowing one more shot to come Prudhomme's way as in the 76th minute she made a spectacular one handed save off of a shot by Buffalo midfielder Amy Barczuk. Neither team would fire off another shot on goal after that and the horn sounded with the Beavers walking away with their sixth shutout victory of the season.
Leading the way for OSU in shots was Miller who fired off three, one on goal. Richardson claimed a pair with her one on goal as redshirt sophomore Marissa Kovac was the only other Beaver with a shot on goal Saturday, as her one and only shot was saved by the Buff's keeper.
Oregon State now has a little less than a week to rest before heading back home to host its final two matches of the regular season. First up for the 'Beavs is a Friday, Oct. 19 tilt with Arizona State at 3:30pm, which will be televised live on the Pac-12 Networks. It is also 'Kick Cancer' day where all fans are encouraged to wear pink to Lorenz Field.
Sunday Oct. 21st then marks the arrival of senior day, where Head Coach Linus Rhode will pay tribute to his four-member senior class as OSU takes on Arizona at 12pm.
