SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Led by freshman goal keeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme's five saves, the Oregon State women's soccer team defeated UC Santa Barbara Friday evening, 2-0 in the Golden State. Goals from Jenna Richardson and Haley Shaw proved to be the difference as the Beavers pushed their record to 5-1-0, while the Gauchos fell to 2-5-0.
The Beavers struck first when at the 9:26 mark Richardson put one past Gaucho goal keeper Makenna Henry for the early 1-0 OSU lead. The junior midfielder's shot was taken at the top center of the box and was her first goal of the year following her return from Japan playing for Team Canada at the U-20 World Cup. It was also the earliest Oregon State had scored in match during 2012 and the assist went to senior Megan Miller, who now has a team-leading four on the year.
Both teams would trade shots following the contest's first goal, with Oregon State firing another two and UCSB sending three Prudhomme's way as the Beavers went into the locker room with a 1-0 halftime lead.
That slim margin would be quickly extended early on in the second half, when in the 47th minute, Shaw took the rebound off a shot by teammate Olivia Lovell and sent it into the net for her first goal of the season and a commanding 2-0 Orange and Black lead.
Prudhomme ensured that lead would stand, stopping two more shots off of Santa Barbara strikers as the 'Beavs held on for the two-goal victory. The freshman goal keeper now has 18-saves in her first two collegiate starts in goal. Her 13 versus Cal State Fullerton were a season high for any Beaver goalie.
OSU has Saturday to rest and recoup before traveling to take on Cal Poly on Sunday. The match with the Mustangs will be the Beavers' fourth-straight against a Big West Conference opponent. Kick-off is set for 11a.m in San Luis Obispo.
