CORVALLIS, Ore. - It came down the final relay between the Oregon State swimming team and its rivals from Washington State on Friday night, but the Beavers came up just short in dropping the meet to the Cougars, 139-123. The Beavers' 10 seniors were honored prior to the meet.
To win the meet, OSU would have needed a first and second place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Instead, the Beavers posted a second and third. The matchup was close throughout. At the halfway point, Washington State led, 66-65, and the lead was still a single point for the Cougars four events later.
Junior Crystal Kibby moved the Beavers to within striking distance in the penultimate race with her victory in the 200-yard individual medley. It capped what has become a string of great events for Kibby. She swam in four races Friday and won them all. She added individual wins in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke races, posting her third fastest time of the season in the 200-yarder (2:19.83).
She also opened the meet with a tied victory in the 200-yard medley relay, joining freshman Amani Amr and seniors Ocean Trail and Carrie Kelsey. Amr posted second place in both the 100- and 200-yard backstroke. Trail was second in the 100-yard freestyle and Kelsey was fourth in that race.
Much like Kibby, freshman Sammy Harrison is making a habit of first touches on the wall. She won three individual freestyle races including a season (and career) best in the 1,000-yarder (10:05.24). Her other wins came in the 200 and 500. Senior Amy Herbst also posted a season-best time in the 1,000 (10:57.67).
The other win came from senior Ivette Dailey-Deaton in the 200-yard butterfly (2:05.23). Junior Aya Fujimura came in just behind and registered second place. She also added a third place in the 100-yard butterfly.
Oregon State closes its home schedule tomorrow morning against Idaho at 11:00 a.m. at Dixon Recreation Center.
