CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State swimming team is set to continue its 2015-16 campaign this weekend, as the Beavers trek to the state of California for the second consecutive weekend for meets at USC and UCLA.
Oregon State is slated to open the weekend with a meet against the Trojans on Friday at 2 p.m. PT. The Beavers finish off the weekend with a noon PT meet on Saturday at UCLA. Also competing against Oregon State and UCLA on Saturday will be UC-Santa Barbara.
“These two meets will be our toughest challenges yet,” Oregon State head coach Larry Liebowitz said. “These are two teams that are expected to be in the top-10 nationally this year, so they're both pretty solid. It's a great opportunity for us not only to race these teams hard, but also to learn. The team is training extremely well and I think they're better than what they've shown the last two meets. I think we can really set ourselves up for the rest of the year by what we do this weekend.”
Last time out, the Beavers were led by senior Sammy Harrison, who moved to 6-0 in individual races this season after winning the 500 and 1,000 freestyle races in each meet last week. Notably, the Henderson, Nev. native swam a 10:14.39 in the 1,000 freestyle at San Diego State, the fifth-fastest time in the history of the Aztec Aquaplex.
Senior Amani Amr took home her first victory of the season with a win in the 200-yard backstroke at San Diego, finishing first with a time of 2:07.41. Junior Czsarina Isleta enters this weekend with a pair of wins in the 200 breaststroke after clocking a time of 2:22.99 at USD.
The USC swimming team is coming off a 2014-15 season in which the Trojans recorded a top-five national finish and a third-place finish in the Pac-12. UCLA placed fifth in the Pac-12 last season with a No. 23 national finish.
“The breaststroke will be important - we have a really nice group of swimmers in that event,” Liebowitz said. “Sammy will have all the challenge that she can get this weekend from each meet in both the 1,000 and 500 freestyle. Some of the most important races for us will be the relays. If we race their relays strong, I think it'll set us up for a nice weekend.”
After this weekend's meets, the Oregon State swimming team takes a week off before returning to action against Pacific and Fresno State on Saturday, Nov. 7. The meet from Stockton, Calif. is set to begin at 11 a.m. PT.
