Beavers In Third Through 36 Holes In Eugene
March 27, 2017 | Men's Golf
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon State men's golf team put together two solid rounds on Monday and sits in third place through 36 holes at the 28th Annual Duck Invitational.
The Beavers opened the tournament with a 4-over 288 and followed that with a 1-over 285 at the par-71, 7,020-yard Eugene Country Club to put them in third in the 15-team field with a 5-over 573.
Host Oregon jumped out to a 10-stroke lead after firing a 8-under 560, while Arizona is second with a 2-over 570. San Diego State is four strokes behind Oregon State and in fourth place with a 9-over 577 and Utah is fifth with a 10-over 578.
The final round of the two-day, 54-hole tournament begins at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday and live scoring is available on golfstat.com.
"It was a real nice job by the team today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "It was nice to keep the momentum going from Bandon Dunes after the break for finals. It's always nice to play close to home and in conditions you are familiar with and the guys were ready.
"We did a lot of good things well today, but we also left some shots out there to finish. Tomorrow will be about doing the same thing we have done for the last five rounds. Being the best version of ourselves and being into every shot."
Senior Kevin Murphy fired a 5-under 66 in the afternoon to jump 35 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for sixth place with a 2-under 74-66--140. He carded a career-best 6-under 66 in the first tournament of the season, The Jackrabbit, in Valentine, Neb.
The Rogue River, Ore., native has recorded seven career top-10 finishes, including a career-best second place at the El Macero Classic in California last spring.
"On Kevin's third hole this afternoon, he said 'coach, I'm going to take it low this afternoon' and he didn't disappoint. He holed a 52-yard wedge shot on the 16th hole and then hit a hybrid to about 10 feet on the sixth hole from 242 yards."
Jonas Liebich carded his seventh sub-par round in his junior campaign after opening the tourney with a 1-under 70. He shot a 2-over 73 after the lunch break and sits in 16th place with a 1-over 143. His best career finish is a tie for 11th last year at the Redhawk Invitational.
Senior Calum Hill is a stroke back of Liebich with a 2-over 144 after posting scores of 74-70 to put him in a tie for 17th. He now has nine career sub-par rounds in two seasons at Oregon State, including an 8-under 63 Alister MacKenzie Invitational this past fall.
Sophomore Trevor Yu is tied for 36th place with a 6-over 72-76--148 and freshman Shawn Lu is tied for 57th with an 8-over 72-78--150.
"Jonas played solid all day and Shawn had the round of the morning," Reehoorn said. "After starting 5 over through his first six holes, Shawn getting it back to 1 over was huge for the team and a testament to his ability to keep fighting."
Sophomore Tom Kerkvliet and freshman Kyosuke Hara are competing as individuals. Hara is tied for 22nd place with a 3-over 74-71--145 and Kerkvliet is in sole 77th with a 14-over 83-73--156.
Sulman Raza of Oregon posted an impressive 11-under 67-64--131 to give him a seven-stroke lead over Petter Mikalsen of Denver and Norman Xiong of Oregon, who both shot a 4-under 138.
