Anderson and Letrari end four-day event with second NCAA B Standard each; Beavers finish ninth
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – The Oregon State University swimming program closed its run at the 2018 Pac-12 Women's Swimming and Diving Championships on Saturday at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center with two more NCAA B Standard times as sophomore Felicia Anderson (Portland, Ore.) and junior Arianna Letrari (Bolzano, Italy) each recorded one on the day.
"As a program, we performed at our best," said head coach Jennifer Buffin. "With all the personal and season best times across the board and with top performances from Arianna (Letrari) and Felicia (Anderson), we were as good as expected.
"I am excited for the future with such a young team and thankful for our seniors for their leadership this year."
Anderson posted her fifth B standard of 2017-18 in the 200 back with a season-best time of 1:58.23 to finish 22nd overall while racing in the 'C' final. The Portland, Ore., native was less than a quarter-second off her personal best time of 1:58.07 originally set at the 2017 Pac-12 Championships.
Letrari followed suit with a time of 1:59.15 in the 'C' final of the 200 fly, placing 21st overall, to finish the year with five NCAA B Standard times between the 100 fly, 200 fly and the 200 IM.
Outside of the duo, Oregon State also got strong performances from a handful of swimmers to finish ninth as a team at the championships.
Newcomer Brooke Hofmann (Stayton, Utah) narrowly missed the cut for the 200 breast finals with a time of 2:19.95 for a new personal best and a 28th-place finish. Classmate Fernanda Rodriguez (Portland, Ore.) finished in 34th at the same event with a time of 2:25.91, less than two seconds off her personal best.
Freshman Isabelle Bishop (Davis, Calif.) shaved nearly three seconds off her PR time in the 200 back at 2:07.46 to finish in 31st, while classmate Madelyn Rainey (Bellevue, Wash.) and senior Emma Osowski (Valencia, Calif.) went back-to-back at 33rd and 34th with times of 2:08.41 and 2:11.77, respectively.
The 100 free had five separate Beavers in the water, all setting either personal or season bests across the board.
Freshman Callan Jackman (Dublin, Calif.) led the way after clocking a time of 51.65 to best her previous personal best by almost two seconds, finishing 37th in the event. Classmate Riley Neal (Hillsboro, Ore.) added a season best time of 52.89 to finish in 46th and was a hair's breadth away from matching her PR of 52.87.
Senior captain Noemie Midrez (Verviers, Liège, Belgium) closed her career in the Orange and Black with a new personal best in the 100 free by touching the wall in 53.14 to finish in 47th, nearly a half-second faster than her previous best set in the 2015 Pac-12 Championships.
Junior Megan Lam (Portland, Ore.) added a new personal best of 53.94, lowering her previous best by almost a quarter second, while Bishop rounded out the look with an exhibition time of 53.97 for her second personal best of the day.
Freshman Amina Bachir (Las Vegas, Nev.) swam the mile in the pool to start the final set of events as her time in the 1650 free of 18:21.24 put her in 26th in the marathon.
The 400 free relay team of Anderson, Letrari, Neal and Jackman put the final stamp on Oregon State's run at the championships, finishing ninth in the event with a time of 3:26.22.
With the NCAA Championships next, only Anderson and Letrari are eligible to be invited with their 10 combined B standard times. Student-athletes who post an A standard time are automatically invited to the NCAA Championships while only a limited amount of B standard times will get an invite. Check back at OSUBeavers.com in the coming week to see if Anderson and Letrari will get a shot to race at the NCAA Championships hosted by the Ohio State University.
