Beavers Through 18 Holes At The Goodwin
March 29, 2018 | Men's Golf
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Oregon State men's golf team sits in the middle of a packed 26-team field after the opening round of The Goodwin on Thursday.
Â
The Beavers played in the morning wave and carded a 6-over 290 at the par-71, 7,143-yard TPC Harding Park to put them in a tie for 14th place and ahead of three Pac-12 teams -- No. 22 Arizona State (8-over 292), No. 16 USC (13-over 297) and Utah (14-over 298).
Â
No. 20 Stanford holds the clubhouse lead with a 7-under 277, while No. 46 Northwestern is second with a 6-under 278 and No 9 Oklahoma and No. 31 Oregon are tied for third with a 5-under 279.
Â
There will be a double shotgun in Friday's second round, starting with the morning wave on the first and 10th tees at 7:30 a.m. and the afternoon group at noon. Oregon State will start at noon and be paired with San Jose State and SMU.
Â
Live scoring for the three-day, 54-hole tournament is available at golfstat.com.
Â
"As a whole we played very solidly today," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "The guys should be really proud of the way they are competing. Once again they got off to a slow start but found a way to hang in there and finish well at the end.
Â
"Tomorrow will probably be tougher as we will be playing in the afternoon. The wind will be up and the greens will be firmer. It will be very important for us to maintain the same attitude and be ready to handle some adversity. TPC Harding Park is a championship golf course that requires a lot of discipline on every shot."
Â
Spencer Tibbits continued a strong freshman campaign with a team-best even-par 71 that included three birdies and three bogeys.
Â
Junior Trevor Yu, sophomore Kyosuke Hara and sophomore Shawn Lu each fired a 2-over 73. Yu and Lu both knocked in two birdies and Hara had one.
Â
Freshman Keaton Gudz equaled Tibbits with a team-high three birdies that helped him post a 4-over 75.
Â
Jeffrey Swegle of Stanford has a two-stroke lead for the individual crown after posting an 8-under 63.
