Beavers Finish Tied For Eighth In Hawai'i
February 09, 2019 | Men's Golf
WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i – The Oregon State men's golf team played well for the second straight and finished in a tie for eighth place at the 28th Annual Amer Ari Invitational on Saturday.
Â
The Beavers concluded the three-day, 54-hole tournament with a 13-under 285-279-287--851 at the par-72, 7,074-yard Waikoloa Kings' Course. They finished tied with No. 2 Georgia Tech and ahead of three Pac-12 teams -- Utah (10th place), Stanford (13th place) and Colorado (15th place).
Â
"This is a very good start to the beginning of the season," Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn said. "The last three days were a complete team effort with everyone contributing."
Â
Freshman Sean Kato and sophomore Spencer Tibbits both led Oregon State with a 4-under 212 to finish in a tie for 24th place. Kato posted scores of 71-70-71 and Tibbits finished with 73-68-71.
Â
"Sean Kato was rock solid from start to finish this week," Reehoorn said. "He simply competes nonstop in everything he does and it's fun to watch.
Â
"I'm proud of Spencer and the effort he gave after a disappointing opening round. He made bogey on the first hole in round two and was 6 under after that point. In the past he might have let it get away and this week he kept competing and posted the scores he expects. He is showing a lot of growth and maturity."
Â
Junior Kyosuke Hara was consistent throughout the tourney, shooting a 2-under 72-70-72--214 to finish in a tie for 37th place.
Â
Senior Trevor Yu finished in a tie for 48th place with an even-par 69-71-76--216 and junior Shawn Lu shot a 3-over 74-72-73--219 for a tie for 66th.
Â
Freshman Nolan Thoroughgood competed as an individual and finished in a tie for 75th place with a 6-over 67-76-79--222.
Â
Oklahoma State cruised to the team title with a 47-under 817 and the Cowboys' Matthew Wolff claimed medalist honors with an 18-under 198.
Â
The Beavers have two weeks off before competing on Monday, Feb. 25 and Tuesday, Feb. 26 at the Southwestern Invitational in Westlake Village, Calif.
