Beavers Sweep UC Irvine to Open the Season
August 30, 2019 | Women's Volleyball
EUGENE, Ore. – The Oregon State volleyball team (1-0) got the 2019 season on the right foot sweeping UC Irvine (0-1) in the first match of the Oregon Classic.
The Beavers won by scores of 25-12, 25-22 and 25-11 to earn their fourth straight season-opening win under fourth-year head coach Mark Barnard.
Oregon State came out to a strong start taking an early 12-5 lead over the Anteaters as freshman outside hitter Cecilee Max-Brown, who was making her collegiate debut, knocked down four kills in the initial surge. The Beavers continued to pour it on as Maddie Goings, who converted to the right side this season, recorded four kills on her first four attacks giving the Beavers a 20-8 lead. OSU secured the opening set 25-12.
"We played as well as I've seen us play to begin the first set," Barnard said. "Up 20-8 to start that season was great. They really went out and implemented what we've practice really well. It was nearly flawless."
UCI regrouped between sets raising its game at the net to begin the second stanza registering three straight blocks to open a four-point lead at 6-2. The Beavers closed the gap several times before finally tying the game at 18-18 on a block by Goings and Lindsey Schell. Oregon State continued to press the action gaining separation at 22-20 on a kill by transfer sophomore Chloe Brown, who tallied a match-high 12 kills. The Beavers held on, 25-22, to take a 2-0 lead at the break.
OSU carried its momentum from the second set into the third going up 9-1 forcing a pair of timeouts by the Anteaters. Schell recorded a pair of blocks to go with two kills during that stretch. The Beavers continued to stretch their lead holding on to finish it at 25-11 completing the sweep.
"We did a very nice job of running a balanced offense with our outsides. Cecilee (Max-Brown) and Chloe (Brown) did a great job and Maddie (Sheehan) is just playing so much better this season. We'd like to get our middles involved a bit more and we'll really have something."
Game Notes: It is the fourth straight season-opening win for fourth-year head coach Mark Barnard … Two Beavers made their first career starts at OSU including transfer outside hitter Chloe Brown and true freshman outside hitter Cecilee Max-Brown … Redshirt senior Kory Cheshire returned to the floor for the Beavers after missing the 2018 season due to injury and receiving a sixth-year of eligibility in the offseason … Brown led the Beavers with 12 kills and Max-Brown added 10 … Brown also recorded her first career double-double at OSU with 12 kills and 14 digs; Sheehan also registered a double-double with 38 assists and 10 digs … Junior libero Grace Massey became the 16th player in OSU history to record 1,000 digs in her career.
Next Up: OSU plays again this evening at 5 p.m. taking on Boston College to complete the Beavers' portion of the Oregon Classic.
