Beavers Conquer Cougars
September 12, 2019 | Women's Soccer
Brianna McReynolds and McKenzie Weinert score for the Beavers.
Houston, Texas – The Oregon State women's soccer program (6-0-0) dominated for 90 minutes as freshman Brianna McReynolds netted three goals and redshirt sophomore McKenzie Weinert scored two as the Beavers took down Houston (2-5-0) on Thursday night, 5-0.
The Beavers are off to the best start the program has ever had after starting the season 6-0-0 and this is the first time Oregon State has put together four-consecutive shutouts since 2007.
"I am super proud of our women for showing a ton of grit and determination," said head coach Matt Kagan. "We scored a great goal early and then tightened the screws in the second half. I thought our bench was massive tonight, as they came in and raised the level."
Oregon State started the game off on an offensive attack. The Beavers got off three shot attempts within the first four and a half minutes of play coming from McReynolds, freshman Abby Schwartz and senior Paula Leblic. Weinert was the next Beaver to get a shot off during the eighth minute of play that found the back of the net.
Both Leblic and McReynolds tried to strike again in the first half before OSU went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.
Much like the first half, Oregon State entered the second half with a spark as sophomore Laura Galceran fired a shot off within the two minutes of play. Galceran's shot missed, but McReynolds was able to follow the action, not even 30-seconds later, to record her first goal of the night to double OSU's lead, 2-0.
OSU took complete control of the game in the 54th minute when Weinert struck again for the Beavers after fighting through three defenders before sending a shot into the lower right corner of the goal. McReynolds netted her second for the night in the 63rd minute off an assist from Taylor Lemmond before she added another in the 66th minute off an assist from Ashleigh Fonsen pushing OSU's lead to 5-0.
Thursday's game marked the ninth time in program history that Oregon State has scored four goals in the second half and the first since Nov. 12, 2010 when the Beavers defeated Memphis in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championships.
The Beavers outshot the Cougars, 16-13 with shots coming from six different Beavers (McReynolds – 5; Weinert – 3; Leblic and Abby Schwartz – 2; Galceran and Fonsen – 1). In goal, sophomore Bridgette Skiba and redshirt senior Lindsay LaMont combined for the fifth clean sheet for the Beavers this season.
Oregon State continues action in Houston, Texas on Sunday when the Beavers take on Rice on at 5 p.m. PT.
