Fuenmayor, Eyre Lead Oregon State Men’s Golf On Final Day In Phoenix
April 15, 2023 | Men's Golf
PHOENIX, Ariz. – Mateo Fuenmayor and Brandon Eyre both finished the third round of the Thunderbird Collegiate under par Saturday, highlighting Oregon State's contingent on the final day of the event.
Fuenmayor shot a 2-under 69 to end the three-round event with a 1-under 212. He birdied five times on Saturday to finish with 15 over 54 holes, tying for the tournament lead. With the 1-under finish, he ended the Collegiate tied for 28th.
Eyre, competing as an individual, had the best mark of the day for the Beavers, coming in at 3-under 68. He had seven birdies on Saturday and 12 over 54 holes. He ended the event tied for 54th with a 6-over 219.
Oregon State, as a team, ended the Thunderbird Collegiate tied for sixth with Texas with a 4-under 848. The Beavers and Longhorns were just two shots shy of No. 5 SMU.
"If OSU beat the No. 3 team in the nation, fans would be in for a big celebration at Reser Stadium. Finishing sixth makes it look a little different but to beat Texas Tech, tie Texas, and finish ahead of Baylor validates what we've done the last few events," said Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn. "Once again, it was a team effort with all five guys playing a role in our success this week. It's fun to see them competing at such a high level and beginning to believe they are a team who can compete with the best in the country."
Jackson Lake finished at par for the second time during the trip and finished first among the Oregon State contingent in a tie for 20th. He shot a 2-under 211 over 54.
Carson Barry tied Fuenmayor after also finishing at par on Saturday. He picked up three birdies on Saturday and 11 for the tournament en route to a 1-under 212.
Nolan Thoroughgood, like Eyre, shot a 6-over 219 over the three rounds to tie for 54th. He shot a 1-over 72 on Saturday, equaling his second-round score from Friday. He finished with five birdies.
Rylan Johnson ended tied for 57th after shooting a 4-over 75 Saturday. Johnson picked up five birdies in the third round of action, totaling nine overall.
Sean Kato, also competing as an individual, finished with a 10-over 223. He posted a 5-over 76 on Saturday, and ended the tournament with nine birdies. Kato finished in a tie for 72nd.
