Match 1: Montana State 3, Oregon State 2 (25-14, 21-25, 25-14, 21-25, 13-15)
The Beavers battled back through five match points for Montana State (1-0) before the host Bobcats completed a five-set win to knock off OSU. Despite being down as many as six points in the decisive fifth, Oregon State (0-1) clawed back to 13-14 before an attack error on Peyton Suess sealed the defeat.
Mychael Vernon and Megan Sheridan led the Beavers with a combined 28 kills, Vernon added 13 digs to seal her first double-double of the campaign. A trio – Amanda Burns, Lauren Rumel and Suess – each etched eight kills while Aliyah McDonald contributed five. Three – Suess, Vernon and Ryan White -  tallied double-digit figures in digs (18, 13 and 14, respectively).
A Burns service ace with a 5-0 run in the first set helped Oregon State pull away from the Bobcats to take the morning's early momentum. The Beavs used 12 kills and .357 hitting percentage on the way to the 11-point set win.
Oregon State scored 10 of the third set's first 13 points, with consecutive service aces from Rumel to help with the set with an 11-point cushion at 25-14.
The second set went back-and-forth before a service error and an ace tilted the momentum in the Bobcats' favor as they evened things with a 25-21 win. Montana State overcame an 8-2 hole in the fourth to tie things and send it to a decisive fifth set.
Match 2: Kennesaw State 3, Oregon State 1 (15-25, 25-17, 18-25, 18-25)
Oregon State (0-2) dropped its second match of the day to Kennesaw State (2-0) in the afternoon match of the tournament's first day. Vernon and Suess led the Beavers with 15 and 13 kills, respectively while each added six digs. White paced Oregon State with 15 digs.
Kennesaw State took advantage of OSU errors as they jumped to an 11-4 lead on the way to taking the first set by a 25-15 scoreline. Vernon led the Beavs with five kills in the set.
Doubling her kills in the second to 10, Vernon led the Beavers to the set win where they did not trail on the way to a 25-17 win. When KSU's Claire Parsons killed off an Elizabeth Schuster serve, Suess and Vernon combined for a four-point run of their own to re-take the lead at 13-9. A final 6-3 run highlighted by kills from Kinley Swan, Sheridan and Suess secured the set win.
Kennesaw State battled back from multiple multi-point deficits to spurn the Beavs in the third set. Oregon State couldn't hold 8-5 and 11-7 advantages as their leads slipped away. The two sides alternated the final set's 32 points before Kennesaw State used back-to-back aces and took advantage of an OSU miscue for the 19-16 lead they didn't relinquish. Fighting their way back, Oregon State got it within four at 22-18 before three Owl kills clinched the victory.
Oregon State will wrap up play from Bozeman with a matchup against North Dakota. The Beavers and Hawks will meet at 10 a.m. PT.
