Johnson, Quintero Lead Beavers After Two Days In Michigan
September 05, 2023 | Men's Golf
GRAND HAVEN, Mich. – Rylan Johnson and Nicolas Quintero are tied for the Oregon State men's golf team's lead after two days at the Folds of Honor Collegiate on Tuesday. The duo lead the Beavers as OSU is in 11th after 36 holes.
Johnson had the best round of the day for Oregon State Tuesday, finishing with a 2-over 73. The sophomore finished with three birdies, including on par-4 holes five and 14.
He and Quintero are tied for ninth after 36.
"The course is playing very tough," said Oregon State head coach Jon Reehoorn. "Nicolas and Rylan have done a great job of controlling their emotions, being all in to each shot and executing the shots when needed. And when something hasn't gone their way they have done a great job of bouncing back quickly."
Quintero was one shot off Johnson, posting a 3-over 74. He added two more birdies and is tied for the tournament lead with nine. Johnson is two shy with seven to help give the Beavers 92 over the first 36 holes.
Mateo Fuenmayor posted a 6-over 77 after posting two birdies, while Alfred Raja was close behind after three birdies of his own. Raja shot a 7-over 78 on the day. Stanley Lin, in his first tournament with the Beavers, finished at 10-over on Tuesday.
"The wind was blowing good to get the day going," Reehoorn said. "Holes one-to-five on the front nine are some of the toughest and we didn't execute the shots we needed to in the moment; too many big numbers. We can't compete at the highest levels by giving our opponents shots."
Raja is tied for 59th at 10-over overall. Fuenmayor is tied for 66th at 13-over, while Lin is tied for 71st at 16-over.
OSU concludes play on Wednesday. The tournament is being broadcast on the Golf Channel.
