Oregon State Q&A: Lauren Garrett
July 23, 2024 | Women's Rowing
A member of the Oregon State Women's Rowing team, Lauren Garrett recently completed her freshman season in Corvallis.
Â
Originally from West Linn, Ore., she was a key contributor for the team this season, helping propel the second varsity eights to a season-opening victory before rowing with the first eights in each of the team's final four regattas; this included an appearance with the 1V8+ boat at the 2024 Pac-12 Championships where the Beavers finished in fourth place.
Â
Garrett participated in a Q&A with OSUBeavers.com about her path to Oregon State and the women's rowing program.
Â
When did you know you wanted to be a student-athlete at the college level? What drew you to it?
Lauren Garrett: I knew I wanted to be a student athlete at the college level when I competed and won at youth nationals. It was at that point I knew I wanted to compete at the highest level I could.
Â
What's one thing you wish more people knew about your sport and what it takes to be competitive?
LG: I wish more people knew just how challenging this sport is both physically and mentally.
Â
What does it mean to you to wear the Orange and Black?
LG: My Dad was a rower here at Oregon State, so it means a lot to me to be able to row here as well.
Â
If you could pick any other sport to play, what would it be and why?
LG: I would choose volleyball; I played for five years and enjoyed it.
Â
What drives you to succeed?
LG: I love competition and seeing how far I can push myself.
Â
Where do you see yourself in 20 years?
LG: Hopefully I will have a successful career as a firefighter.
Â
Name your top three things to do in Oregon when you're not playing or studying.
LG: My top three things to do are going kayaking, hiking and swimming.
Â
What are your top-three favorite movies?
LG: Little shop of Horrors, Sweeny Todd and Bubble boy.
