CORVALLIS, Ore. – Head coach Lindsey Behonick has announced the transfer of a new student athlete to the Oregon State volleyball team with Tia Shum, as announced on Thursday.
Tia Shum
London, Ontario (ECU/Saunders Secondary School) • Defensive Specialist/Libero • 5-6
Arriving in Corvallis from ECU, Shum was a three-year contributor to the Pirates with 633 digs across 80 matches. She helped lead the Pirates to postseason play with consecutive appearances in the Super 16 of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship.
She opened 2023 with a 20-dig performance on the way to leading ECU to the postseason. In the final six matches of the season, Shum averaged 14.5 digs-per-match including 31 total in the pair of NIVC contests against The Citadel and Georgia Southern. She capped the season with nine matches in double-figures and helped the offense with 28 assists.
Shum quickly won the starting libero spot in her freshman season (2021) behind a team-leading 359 digs and 3.86 digs-per-set rate. In her first 12 collegiate matches, she eclipsed double-digit digs on nine occasions, including 20 twice. She had 12-or-more digs in seven matches in a 10-match stretch to highlight her freshman season. Her 359 digs proved to rank seventh in the American Athletic Conference.
Prior to her time in Greenville, N.C., Shum led her prep team – Saunders Secondary School – to their first Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations title in 27 years following a run that saw them not dop a set and a 55-2 mark. In 2020, she represented Ontario as their libero in 2020 and also earned a silver medal at the 2019 USA volleyball High Performance Championships.
What Coach Behonick is saying: "Tia is going to be an awesome addition to our team. Not only is she a great human with incredible leadership skills, she has maturity on the court from her undergraduate collegiate career. She communicates well, plays relentless defense and has a serve that will absolutely be effective to point score for us. She is personable and inclusive – personality traits that will help shape our team for the better off the court as well. We are so excited Tia has chosen to come west for her final year and be a Beaver!"
Shum will join five other student-athletes to arrive in Corvallis ahead of the 2025 season.
