Dan Spencer Returns To Oregon State, Working With Baseball And Softball

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Dan Spencer, who helped lead Oregon State to national championships in 2006 and 2007, is returning to Corvallis, it was announced Tuesday. He will serve as a special assistant to the coaching staffs with the Oregon State baseball and softball programs.

"I am very fortunate to get the opportunity to come back to Oregon State," Spencer said. "I want to thank Mitch (Canham) and Laura (Berg) for putting together this opportunity. There truly is no place like home. I'm very excited to get started."
Spencer will assist both coaching staffs on a day-to-day basis. He most recently spent six seasons as the head coach at Linfield. He's also served as the head coach at Texas Tech from 2009-12 and Green River Community College from 1992-96.

Oregon State fans will remember Spencer for his tenure with the baseball program, first as an assistant coach from 1997-2003 and then as associate head coach from 2004-07. He guided the Oregon State pitching staff during his time, which included national titles in 2006 and 2007. OSU's pitching staff led the then-Pac-10 in earned run average in 2005 and 2006. He was named Collegiate Baseball's National Pitching Coach of the Year in 2007.

"Dan has been a tremendous mentor to me since I met him in the summer of 2002," said Canham, the Pat Casey Head Baseball Coach. "I can speak from personal experience, that this man loves people and changes their lives for the better. He is a man who understands the game of baseball, but more importantly, how to be a leader and teach others to become the best versions of themselves. Thirty years ago he started coaching Division I baseball at Oregon State, won two national titles, helped transform his communities, developed future big leaguers, and now we are fortunate to have him back home to help the Beavers.

Said Berg, the Oregon State softball head coach: "We are really looking forward to working with Dan. His experience and knowledge will help my staff and me continue to grow as coaches, which ultimately allows us to better develop our players and help them reach their full potential."

Spencer's time at Oregon State, Texas Tech and New Mexico – as an assistant from 2013-15 – helped produce players who earned 26 All-American awards. He also served as an assistant coach at Washington State from 2016-19 before taking over at Linfield starting in 2020.
