Gift Establishes Second Endowed Position Fund For Oregon State Baseball

CORVALLIS, Ore. – A $1.25 million commitment to Oregon State Athletics will establish the Wilfred Family Director of Baseball Operations and support Beaver Football through the Valley Challenge for Student-Athletes.Â
The anonymous gift to the OSU Foundation creates the second endowed position in Oregon State Baseball history and the third endowed position within Oregon State Athletics. It joins the Pat Casey Head Baseball Coach, held by Mitch Canham, and the Wicks-Street Head Men's Soccer Coach, held by Jared Brookins.Â
Together with support for Beaver Football, the commitment represents an investment in both the immediate and long-term success of two of Oregon State's flagship programs, helping provide resources that enhance the student-athlete experience and position the Beavers for sustained excellence in an evolving collegiate athletics landscape.Â
"I am grateful to this donor. Support like this is not only generous, but strategic," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Kevin Griffin. "An endowed position is permanent by design – it will still be supporting Beaver Athletics long after any of us are here, and in a landscape that changes this fast, that kind of stability is rare."Â
The Wilfred Family Director of Baseball Operations is a full-time role supporting daily operations across the program.Â
"Most of what makes a season work happens before anyone gets to the ballpark – travel, scheduling and the hundred other details that have to line up," said Pat Casey Head Baseball Coach Mitch Canham. "This role handles that. This donor's generosity is a legacy gift that enable us to staff this position so that our coaching staff can continue to mentor our student-athletes for continued success nationally and in the Pac-12."Â
In addition to its impact on baseball, the commitment includes support for the Valley Challenge for Student-Athletes, directly benefiting student-athletes in Beaver Football.Â
"Our players notice when someone outside this building decides to invest in them," said Head Football Coach JaMarcus Shephard. "That belief carries weight in a locker room, and it changes how a young man sees his future here. I'm grateful to this donor for investing in that potential."Â
The gift builds on remarkable momentum Oregon State Athletics is experiencing in philanthropic support as it enters the next chapter of the new Pac-12 conference.Â
