Beavers Open European Swing With 76-59 Win Over St. Charles

Photo GalleryCHARENTON, France - Angus Brandt had 17 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Oregon State men's basketball team to a 76-59 win over the St. Charles Basketball Club in Charenton, France on Tuesday night.
The senior center has been the talk of the summer workouts and practices for his excellent play heading into his senior season and the Aussie didn't disappoint as he went 6-for-13 from the field, including two from beyond the arc, to pace the Beavers to a win in their first of four games during their 11-day trip to France and Spain.
"Angus was aggressive, that's the big thing, and he is confident," Oregon State coach Craig Robinson said. "If he can do that for us, we are going to be a much better team this year."
Roberto Nelson had 15 points, five rebounds and four assists and Devon Collier came out strong in the second half after picking up two early fouls to finish with 13 points, on 6-of-6 from the field, five rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.
Oregon State came out sluggish in the opening quarter but went on a 20-8 run to take a 26-16 lead after the first of the four 10-minute quarters. The Beavers built a 15-point halftime lead before the Level 2 French Pro League team went on a 12-0 run to open the third quarter and pull within three at 45-42.
The Beavers answered with a 13-3 run behind six points by Collier and five by Brandt to take a 58-45 lead through three quarters and then coasted in the final frame as Robinson emptied the bench with five players seeing their first career action in an Oregon State uniform.
Victor Robbins led the freshmen with five points, three rebounds and three assists, while Jarmal Reid added two points and three steals and Langston Morris-Walker showed he's going to be a force on defense. Daniel Gomis, who is still recovering from a broken leg, made a free throw and Michael Moyer missed his only field goal attempt
"I'm glad we won and I'm glad we didn't have any injuries, but it just shows that we have a lot of work to do," Robinson said. "On the positive side, I thought the freshmen did a great job defensively especially. It doesn't seem like we'll have trouble scoring, but we still have some shoring up to do on defense. We have to get used to the fouling over here. We had some foul trouble that made the game sort of different than I wanted it to be. But, all in all, I'm glad no one got hurt and I'm glad we have some more games to play."
Robinson went with a starting five of Ahmad Starks and Nelson at guard, Joe Burton and Collier at forward and Brandt at center with Eric Moreland the first player off the bench. Moreland had eight points and four points and Starks finished with three steals.
Oregon State shot 49.1 percent (28-of-57) from the field and 64 percent (16-of-25) from the free throw line. The Beavers finished with 17 assists and 16 steals, but also had 22 turnovers, a number Robinson knows the team will get better as they continue the trip.
"I expected us to have some issues in this game," Robinson said. "It's the first game, it's the summer and we've been walking around Paris. I knew we were going to be a little lackadaisical at the beginning of the game. I thought we did a good job shoring it up. We need to get our veteran guys to get on the stick, because these freshmen are knocking on the door."

The Beavers travel to Barcelona early Wednesday morning where they will play a game on Friday before finishing the trip with two games in Madrid.
