OSU is searching for its seventh straight head-to-head win against the Bulldogs in the Varsity 8+ dating back to 2007
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men’s rowing team will be on the road again this weekend as it travels north to take on Gonzaga in a Sunday race along the Silver Lake in Medical Lake, Wash.
OSU will feature seven total boats in four separate races, including the Varsity 8+, JV 8+, Freshman 8+ and Varsity 4+.
“It’ll be quite a test for the team this weekend, we wrapped up Final Exams on Friday,” said OSU Head Coach Steve Todd. “The emphasis at practice this week has been quality over quantity of work.”
The Beavers have had two weeks off following their three out of four possible first place finishes against the University of Victoria in British Columbia.
Sunday’s race with the Bulldogs will begin at 9 a.m., with the Men’s Freshmen 8+, followed by the Varsity 8+ at 9:30 a.m. and the JV 8+ at 10 a.m. The final men’s race will take place at 11 a.m. at Silver Lake featuring the Varsity 4+, which will have three Oregon State boats in it. The only other race with multiple Orange and Black boats in it will be the Freshmen 8+, where the Beavers will race two crews.
“Last year at Vancouver Lake we had some very close races with Gonzaga,” Todd explained. “The team has to be ready for anything this weekend, and really willing to test themselves.”
In 2012, Todd’s crew finished first against the Zags’, during all of the six races they competed against one another. The last OSU competed against Gonzaga in Spokane was in 2011, when it took home first place honors in four out of five total races.
The OSU men will also be making the trip with the Beaver women, marking the second straight race weekend, both teams will be racing in the same city, on the same day and at the same course.
