OSU will feature four boats in races versus the top ranked Huskies on Dexter Lake
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The No. 19 ranked Oregon State men’s rowing team will host its lone race of the year this weekend during the annual Covered Bridge Regatta on Dexter Lake. The Beavers’ dual with the top ranked Huskies will take place in the noon-hour, with a total of four boats from each school participating.
“We are approaching this race with the mindset to make another step forward,” said Oregon State Coach Steve Todd. “The team had a decent performance in San Diego last weekend; but they’re still searching for a complete race that is well executed and precise. We’ll need that complete race this week going up against the top ranked Huskies.”
The main competition will begin at 12 p.m., with the Freshman 8+ race between OSU and UW, followed by the JV 8+ match-up at 12:10 p.m. At 12:20 p.m., the two schools Varsity 8+ boats will take to the waters, they will also be joined by Western Washington, as well as Lewis and Clark in the Varsity 4+ race, which will start at 12:30 p.m.
Oregon State’s Freshmen 4+ boats will also take part in the day’s events, with two heats in the morning and then a final race in the afternoon. The OSU ‘A’ freshmen 8+ boat will race against Lewis & Clark, Seattle U., Western Washington and Oregon’s ‘A’ boat at 11 a.m. 10 minutes later, the OSU Freshmen 8+ ‘B’ boat will take to waters against Seattle Pacific, Portland State, Chico State and Oregon’s ‘B’ boat in the next heat of the event.
The freshmen 8+ will conclude competition on Saturday with a 3:10 p.m. race in the Covered Bridge Regatta, which will pit them against Western Washington, Portland State and Oregon.
“It’s a great opportunity to have the team race on our ‘home’ course at Dexter Lake,” Todd explained. “There will be a lot of Northwest rowing fans at Dexter Lake for the Covered Bridge Regatta, so it’s our job to put out our best effort.”
The last time OSU raced against Washington on Dexter Lake, was back in April of 2011, when the Huskies were also the No. 1 team in the nation. Like in 2013, OSU also raced against schools, Lewis & Clark and other non-conference opponents in the Covered Bridge Regatta. The Covered Bridge Regatta is an annual event put on by the Oregon Association of Rowers (OAR).
