No. 19 Beavers will take four boats to Vancouver on Sunday to take on a Cal team, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation
CORVALLIS, Ore. – The Oregon State men’s rowing team will head to its secondary home course this weekend, Vancouver Lake in Vancouver, Wash., for a dual race with Pac-12 foe California.
The Bears’ Varsity 8+ boat boasts a No. 2 national ranking, tied with Harvard and will square off against OSU’s boat, ranked 19th in the event. The Beavers Varsity 8+ is tied with George Washington and has moved up one slot from a week ago. The school’s Varsity 8+ race will kick things off on Saturday at 9 a.m. on Vancouver Lake.
“We raced Cal directly at the (San Diego) Crew Classic,” said OSU men’s rowing coach Steve Todd. “I think that we made some improvements in our races up at Redwood Shores (at the Stanford Invite), and we are looking at this as our second half of our season. We are getting ready for Pac-12’s, so we have shaken things up and looked at some new line-ups.”
The JV 8+ race will take place between OSU and Cal at 9:15 a.m., followed by the Freshmen 8+ at 9:30 and the Varsity 4+ at 9:45, marking the dual’s final event.
The last time the Beavers raced a home dual in Vancouver was April, 2012 when they went up against Stanford and Gonzaga.
“It’s a pretty big wide open lake and is a little more wide open than Dexter (Lake),” Todd said about his home away from home. “If the weather holds out and we keep in this good weather pattern, we should have really fair, good racing conditions.”
The race course is located at Vancouver Lake Park (6801 NW Lower River Road) on the west side of Vancouver Lake. The finish line is directly in front of the park's beach. There is a $3 parking fee, but admission to the races is free.
