Oregon State head swimming coach Jennifer Buffin announced thatMichael Wong will join the program as an assistant coach for the upcoming 2016-17 season.
"I am excited to announce the hiring of Michael Wong as the assistant women's wwimming coach," Buffin said. "The experience he has from working with different programs will be invaluable to the women's swimming program."
"I'm very grateful and excited for the opportunity coach Buffin has given me to work with this program and athletic department in establishing her vision for what the Oregon State swimming program can achieve," said Wong. "I look to have a positive impact on everyone associated with the program and engaging with the community."
Wong joins the staff after spending the 2015-16 season as a volunteer assistant coach at California, where he assisted with a team who finished second at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships.
Wong started his coaching career at Pomona-Pitzer College in 2009, first as an assistant coach from 2009-10 before moving into an interim head coach role from 2010-11. In 2011, he landed at USC as a volunteer assistant coach for a season, before again leaving to go to the University of the Pacific as an assistant coach where he held the position for three seasons.
"Michael's knowledge of the sport as well as the relationships he has built with coaches and clubs on the west coast will benefit the program both in recruiting and the performance of our student athletes," continued Buffin. "I look forward to working with Michael as we begin the new year knowing he is going to bring fresh new ideas to the program."
