SPOKANE, Wash. - Oregon State's few errors were costly ones Monday afternoon as the Beavers lost at Gonzaga 2-0 in non-league men's soccer. The Beavers (3-6-0 overall, 0-0-0 MPSF Mountain) and Bulldogs (6-4-1) will meet again at noon Sunday at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.
"We played our best game of the year today," OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. "It wasn't like it was part good, part bad - it was 90 minutes of good soccer, high work rate, high intensity, players being sharp and unselfish ...
"It was nice to see for 90 minutes. We just made three mistakes in the game, and two of them cost us goals."
OSU lost track of a Bulldog player in the 36th minute, and that sprang GU's Jason Kuska for a chip over Beaver goalkeeper Bryan Hill to make it 1-0. Later, in the 44th minute, Gonzaga's Justin Franson managed another score for a 2-0 Bulldog lead.
The Beavers switched keepers at halftime, and Jake Smith made a stop on a penalty kick that kept OSU within 2-0.
"Jake Smith had a sensational half," Taylor said. "He was absolutely sharp in his distribution of the ball. Other than that, there weren't really any standouts because everybody was playing well. Scott Tedder had an unbelievable first half - it was the best he's played this year. Now that we've seen him play at that level, we'll expect higher things from him the rest of the year. Everybody else was just very, very good."
