IRVINE, Calif. - James Albert had two goals and an assist and Greg Howes added two goals for Oregon State in a 5-2 win over Cal-Irvine in non-league men's soccer Friday night. The win came in the Beavers' first game under new head coach Dana Taylor.
OSU (1-0-0 overall) scored a pair of goals early in the second half to take control with a 4-1 lead. The Beavers now travel to San Diego State for a game at 1 p.m. Sunday.
The victory at UCI was the Beavers' first in a season-opener since taking a 3-0 win at St. Mary's in 1995.
"The bottom line is, it was a great team effort from all our players," Taylor said. "We had some quality goals scored, but even though it was a great result, it was not nearly good enough. We need to forget today and look toward Sunday's game, because we'll have our work cut out for us again."
OSU got on the board first when Howes picked up an unassisted goal in the 18th minute, but Cal-Irvine tied it less than a minute later. The Beavers then scored in the final minue before halftime when Albert scored off an assist from Matt Olsen.
Early in the second half, Oregon State put some distance between itself and the home team. J.P. Capodanno scored off an assist from Justin Kirk to make it 3-1 in the 56th minute, then Howes picked up his second goal off an assist by Albert a minute later for a 4-1 margin.
The Anteaters made it 4-2 with a goal in the 59th minute but could draw no closer. Oregon State added the final goal in the 87th minute as Albert scored off an assist by Jon Haddenham.
"It was touch-and-go for a long time," Taylor said. "We had five freshmen starting (Aaron McHardy, Ryan Smith, Justin Kirk, Kevin Weisenfluh and Ryan Foster) and at one time we actually had seven freshmen on the field.
"They held it together well. We're definitely not fit enough and we have to work on set pieces defensively, the two goals they had were man marking responsibilities ... technically, we moved the ball at times very well. Everybody chipped in and played very, very well."
