BERKELEY, Calif. - OREGON STATE UNIVERSITY Freshmen Tanya Ricioli and Annie Campbell each won two individual events to lead the Oregon State gymnastics team to 193.675-192.000 victory over California at the Recreational Sports Facility on Friday. It was OSU's best score of the season.
The rookie duo tied for first place on floor with 9.85 scores, while Campbell turned in a season-high 9.825 to win beam. Ricioli's 9.80 score on bars was good for a first-place tie on that event.
The two freshmen also became the eighth and ninth gymnasts in OSU history to reach the 39.00 mark in the all-around competition. Ricioli won the all-around with a 39.20, while Campbell was third with a 39.00. Cal's Leila Khoury scored a 39.05 to place second.
"We saw some big improvements this evening," said coach Tanya Chaplin. "We are still striving to go 24 for 24. We had to count two falls this evening, which was probably our best effort this year."
For the first time all season, the Beavers did not have to count a fall on bars as they combined for a season-best 48.750 on the event to open the competition on a high note. Ricioli and Annette Taylor led OSU with 9.80 scores, and Jerra Lopez added a 9.775.
Katrina Severin turned in a career-high 9.85 to place first on vault as the Beavers kept the momentum going in the second rotation. Ricioli's 9.80 tied Cal's Janet McKnight for second place.
The Beavers then scored a 49.100 on floor for their first 49+ effort of the year. In addition to Ricioli and Campbell's first-place routines, Severin, Lopez and Lara Degenhardt all earned 9.80 scores to tie for third place.
Campbell also won beam with a career-best 9.825 and Taylor tied for third with a 9.775. The Beavers did had to count two falls on the event, but they were without Corrie Young, who was out with an illness.
