CORVALLIS, Ore. - - Freshman goalkeeper Peter Billmeyer led a strong Oregon State defensive effort with eight saves, but the Beavers (5-5-0 overall, 0-1-0 Pac-10) came up short in a 1-0 loss to Washington (6-4-0, 1-0-0) in the inaugural game of the Pacific-10 Conference men's soccer season on Sunday afternoon.
The goal came at 59:48 when Washington's Zach Kingsley crossed a pass to the far side of the goal that was headed by UW's Dayo Oyetuga. The ball deflected off the far post and then off the hands of Billmeyer and into the net for what proved to be the winning score. Oyetuga was credited with the goal off the assist by Kingsley.
"I thought it was a very even game," OSU head coach Dana Taylor said. "We held the ball a lot and we moved it well. We kept our composure, but our scoring chances need to be better."
Team co-captain Josh Elbaum launched two of his own.
Washington outshot the Beavers 17-9 in a foul-plagued affair in which the teams combined for 34 total fouls and three yellow cards.
"We put forth a great effort for 90 minutes," Taylor said. "The guys played really well, we just need to do a better job with our opportunities in the final third of the field."
The Beavers are now 0-13-1 in the all-time series against the Huskies, but Sunday's effort marked the first time OSU has been within one goal since the teams' second meeting of 1996 when they lost 2-1 Seattle. Sunday's game was also the first time the Beavers have held the Huskies to one goal since a 1-1 tie in 1993. It was the third time in the series that OSU has held UW to one goal.
Oregon State returns to Corvallis for a Pac-10 contest with California on Friday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m.
