CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State finished its non-league women's soccer schedule Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to Pepperdine on Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. Lacey Ubaldi had a goal and an assist for the Waves.
The Beavers (6-6-0 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) start conference play at home against Arizona on Friday at 2 p.m., that game will be followed by OSU's men's team against California at approximately 4 p.m. Those kickoff times have been moved up one hour from previously-announced schedules.
Against Pepperdine (9-1-1, 0-0-0 West Coast), the Beavers didn't approach the level of performance they had displayed Friday in a 2-1 loss to 21st-ranked Florida State. Oregon State had dominated play in that game.
"Obviously, we weren't the same team that showed up Friday," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said. "Our intensity level was not what it should be. Going forward, we were all right, but defensively, we had a bad day and that's something that hasn't been a problem for us this season. But our intensity just wasn't there, which you can't afford in any game."
Ubaldi opened the scoring in the 17th minute, dribbling out to the right flank and then back to the center of the field before launching a shot inside the near post from 10 yards out.
In the 50th minute, the Waves' April Blaker made it 2-0 when she broke down the right side of the field, then shot the ball to the far post from 12 yards away. In the 55th minute, Kate Desmond took a pass to the left from Ubaldi about 15 yards out, then turned and shot it to the far post.
Oregon State owned a 22-11 advantage in shots and forced Pepperdine goalkeeper Lindsey Brouillette to make 11 saves, but many of OSU's shots on goal came from long distance and lacked velocity. The Waves, facing OSU goalkeeper Jerika Duran in the first half and Elizabeth Pease in the second, had more dangerous opportunities.
"We've just got to get ourselves together again with the Pacific-10 season coming up," Fennah said. "We've proven we can play well against good teams, we've just got to get back on track this weekend."
