BOISE, Idaho - The Oregon State gymnastics team, making its first NCAA Championships appearance in four years, placed fifth in its session with a 194.750 score at the Pavilion at Boise State on Thursday afternoon.
While the Beavers did not qualify for the Super Six finals, Oregon State gymnasts earned four All-American honors.
Lara Degenhardt and Tanya Ricioli each scored 9.85 on floor to tie for seventh place and capture second team All-American honors on that event. OSU also had two second team All-Americans on beam, with Annette Taylor and Katrina Severin scoring 9.80 to tie for seventh on that event.
Georgia placed first in the afternoon session with a 196.775, while Utah (196.125) and Alabama (196.075) also advanced to Friday's Super Six. LSU edged out the Beavers by a narrow .200 for fourth place, as the Tigers tallied a 194.950 total. BYU placed sixth with a 194.500 to round out the six-team field.
"I'm extremely proud of them. For the majority of the team, this was their first time at nationals," said coach Tanya Chaplin. "They didn't let the scores drain them, and you could see the determination in them. This is going to take them far next year."
The Beavers started off slowly on bars, scoring a 48.325 - OSU's lowest mark on that event since the first month of the season. While the Beavers didn't have to count any falls, no one scored above a 9.75 on that event. Jerra Lopez led OSU with a 9.75, while Elizabeth Jillson notched a 9.725 for the Beavers. Annie Campbell added a 9.65, and Taylor scored 9.625. Degenhardt and Stephanie Bychowski each scored 9.525, with Bychowski picking up a deduction for scraping the ground while on the low bar.
Taylor appeared to have OSU back on track by leading off with a 9.80 on beam in the next rotation, but the Beavers still looked a little shaky. While OSU got the two 9.80s from Taylor and Severin, no one else scored above 9.675 as a result of some slight stumbles and bobbles. Bychowski scored a 9.675, Campbell added a 9.65 and Ricioli turned a 9.625. Bea Tistu-Whisenhunt scored 9.525.
"We were fairly consistent on beam and didn't have to count a fall. The areas we could have missed, we didn't. This is great stepping stone for us," Chaplin said. "We still have to work on the finishing touches though. I'm sure we had almost a point in landing deductions."
The Beavers came back strong on floor after a bye on the third rotation. Marissa Bruch led things off with a 9.825, just shy of a career-high. Ricioli and Degenhardt highlighted the rotation with back-to-back 9.85 marks, and Lopez added a 9.80 score. Severin turned in a 9.725, while Campbell stumbled on her last tumbling pass short and settled for a 9.425.
OSU closed the meet out on vault, where Degenhardt led the Beavers with a 9.825. Ricioli turned in a 9.80, and Severin added a 9.775 for OSU. Lopez notched a 9.725, and Corrie Young concluded her collegiate career with a 9.70.
