CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State saw Washington pull away in the late innings as the Beavers fell 8-3 in Pacific-10 baseball Saturday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Huskies scored five runs in the final two innings to take the win.
OSU (25-20 overall, 6-8 Pacific-10) will try for its third straight Pacific-10 series win Sunday at 1 p.m. when it meets the Huskies (20-22, 4-10). Oregon State, which has won eight of its last 11 games, won the series-opener 6-3 on Friday.
"We've got to win the series, that's all there is to it," OSU head coach Pat Casey said. "For us to be a team in the middle of the pack and in contention for the postseason, we're going to have some games that we need to win and we'll have one of those games on Sunday."
On Saturday, Matt Massingale pitched a seven-hitter for Washington, recording a career-high 10 strikeouts while walking four. Massingale didn't allow an extra-base hit by the Beavers.
"He was really good today," Casey said of the Huskies' junior righthander. "We didn't do the job at the plate. We had him in trouble in the fourth inning, but we let him off the hook. That took some momentum away from us, and he got better from that point on."
In the fourth inning, the game was tied 1-1 and the Beavers had the bases loaded with two out for Eric Stark. Stark grounded a single up the middle, but Husky shortstop Tila Reynolds managed to knock the ball down and keep it from going into centerfield.
Bryan Ingram scored from third base on the play to give the Beavers a 2-1 lead and Josh Carter advanced from second to third. Zach Gordon rounded second base and headed for third, though, that forced Carter to try for the plate.
By then, Massingale had the ball and his throw to catcher Jefferson Thiel was in time to get Carter for the final out of the inning. That kept OSU from going back to the top of the order to have Drew Hedges - a .415 hitter going into the game - batting with the bases loaded and two out.
Washington then took the lead for good in the top of the fifth. Ed Erickson's two-out double put runners at second and third for Tyler Davidson, who lined a double down the leftfield line to drive in two runs and make it 3-2.
Erickson homered to lead off the eighth and push Washington's lead to 4-2, then the Huskies scored four runs - two of them unearned - off OSU starter Scott Nicholson and three relievers in the ninth. Nicholson took the loss, going eight-plus innings and allowing seven runs (six earned) on 10 hits and two walks while striking out eight.
"Scott didn't pitch a bad game," Casey said. "He made a couple bad pitches and got hurt by them, but he pitched well enough to win in his own yard."
Ingram was 2-for-3 for OSU and Stark was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs batted in. The Beavers' Brian Barden had his hitting streak end at 14 games, going 0-for-4.
Davidson was 3-for-5 for Washington and drove in four runs, while Erickson was 3-for-4 and both Marc Rittenhouse and Reynolds were 2-for-5.
