CORVALLIS, Ore. - - For the third time this season, the Oregon State men's soccer team suffered a loss by one goal. This time the loss came at the hands of Cal-Irvine in the Washington Soccer Classic on Saturday afternoon by a score of 2-1.
The Beavers (3-3-0) trailed 2-0 before making a late-game rally attempt in the form of a Josh Elbaum's corner kick.
Oregon State has now dropped two games in a row, and will get set for an important match against No. 12 Portland on Tuesday when the Beavers return home to Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium for the 5 p.m. kickoff.
After a scoreless first half, UCI (5-1-0) put the first score on the board at 54:37 when Roger Davenger took a lead pass from Ilia Nazarov and dribbled past OSU goalkeeper Mark Muleady for the goal.
UCI took what proved to be a commanding lead less than 10 minutes later when Nazarov took a Scott Bowman crossing pass that led to an easy goal and a 2-0 score.
Muleady, playing in just his second game, had four saves on the afternoon. He now has eight saves on the year.
The Beavers got off just 10 shots, compared to UCI's 17, 10 of which came in the second half. The match also proved to be a physical one, with both teams combining for 46 fouls and two yellow cards.
