CORVALLIS, Ore. - - Matt Olsen led the Oregon State men's soccer team to its second consecutive win as he blasted two goals in a 4-2 non-league win over Cal-Santa Barbara on Friday night. The Beavers, now 5-3-0, had scores from Josh Elbaum and James Albert as well.
The Beavers used a three-goal barrage in an eight-minute span in the second half to bounce back from a 2-1 halftime deficit and claim the win.
"In the first half, they just outworked us," OSU coach Dana Taylor said. "We made too many defensive mistakes. In the second half, we came out and worked hard and took over the game."
The Beavers fell behind midway through the first half when UCSB's Darren Doi put a shot past OSU's Peter Billmeyer off a deflection to take the early lead at 1-0.
OSU countered four minutes later when Olsen headed a free kick from Elbaum into the net to tie the contest at 1-1. Olsen now leads the team with four goals to go with two assists on the year.
Galen Donaldson put UCSB (3-5-0) back on top at the 39-minute mark when he headed a free kick past Billmeyer for the score and a 2-1 halftime lead.
The second half was dominated by Oregon State however, as Olsen scored his second goal of the game and started a momentum swing that carried the Beavers the rest of the game. Justin Kirk led Olsen with a precision crossing pass which Olsen put away to tie it at 2-2 at the 57:00 mark.
Two minutes later, Elbaum recorded his third goal of the season on an assist by Gavin Shak which he headed past UCSB goalkeeper Erik Stolhandske for a 3-2 lead that the Beavers would not relinquish.
"We found our feet in the second half," Taylor said. "We were able to keep the ball on the ground and get behind their defense. I'm extremely proud of the guys and the way they fought back and beat a strong team on their own turf."
James Albert provided OSU's clinching score at the 65:00 mark when he took a lead pass from Jon Law that led to a breakaway and a one-on-one score for the final 4-2 margin.
Taylor opted for a different look in goal in the second half, as he went with freshman Mark Muleady in place of Billmeyer. Muleady and the defense provided a shutout in the second half, as the rangy freshman came up with six saves. Billmeyer had five first-half saves for OSU.
The OSU win marked just the second time their history the two teams have met. OSU has won both contests, including a 6-3 win in 1998.
Matt Olsen now has the team lead for total points with 10 this season, while Elbaum has eight. Elbaum, Olsen and Kirk are tied for the team lead in assists with two apiece.
The Beavers square off against Cal State-Northridge on Sunday in a non-league matchup before entering Pacific-10 Conference play when they travel to Washington on Oct. 1.
