CORVALLIS, Ore. - BreeAnna Jolin's late goal gave Oregon State a 1-0 women's soccer win over Gonzaga on Friday afternoon, extending the Beavers' winning streak to four games. It's the longest streak for OSU (4-1-0 overall, 0-0-0 Pacific-10) since a six-gamer near the end of the 1995 season.
"It wasn't stylish," OSU head coach Steve Fennah said of the victory on a damp, windy afternoon. "They were difficult conditions, and the ball skidded and skipped through. It affected both teams.
"But what's the old catchphrase? `If you win when you don't play well, then things must be going all right.'"
Oregon State now awaits Denver for Sunday's 10 a.m. non-league game at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium. That will be followed by the finale of the OSU/Diadora Classic men's tournament, matching Illinois-Chicago and Sacramento State.
On Friday, Jolin joined OSU's all-time top 10 in goals scored when she booted home the game-winner in the 86th minute against Gonaga (1-3-0, 0-1-0 West Coast). The goal was set up when Morgan Crabtree dribbled down the center of the field, then found Jolin heading for the goal on the left side, Jolin put it past Bulldog keeper Tara Curtis high on the far side.
Jolin joins Dionne Richardson (1989-92) and Jona Maukonen (1995-98) in a tie for 10th place on OSU's all-time list of career goals. It was Jolin's first goal of the season.
The Beavers had managed to stay in a 0-0 deadlock when OSU goalkeeper Jerika Duran came up with a big save in the 74th minute. The Bulldogs were awarded a penalty kick and Katie Carpenter booted it low and to Duran's left, Duran went low and got a knee on the ball to deflect it back outside.
"We came back out and battled," Fennah said. "Jerika made a great stop, and Bree and Leila Kaady and Ann Marie Fallow and the rest just kept going at them. But credit Gonzaga, because they came out and made a game of it."
