CORVALLIS, Ore. - Brian Barden homered and drove in a career-high five runs and Andy Jarvis and Josh Howard added home runs for Oregon State in a 14-5 win over Washington State in Pacific-10 baseball Friday afternoon at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field. The Beavers (23-16 overall, 6-7 Pacific-10) earned head coach Pat Casey his 200th win at Oregon State, in seven seasons, Casey's teams are 200-144-4.
Oregon State also saw Curtis Davis set a single-season school record when he was hit by a pitch for the 13th time this spring.
OSU and Washington State (14-25, 5-8) continue their series Saturday at 1 p.m. and conclude the three-game set Sunday at noon. Both games can be heard on KLOO-AM (1340).
On Friday, Oregon State pounded out 16 hits, the 25th time in 39 games that OSU has had at least 10 hits and the 11th time the Beavers have reached the 15-hit mark. Among Oregon State's hits were the three home runs, a triple by Bryan Ingram, and six doubles.
The Beavers led 12-3 after five innings. Given that lead, senior righthander Thad Johnson improved his record to 5-5 by working into the ninth, allowing five runs (all earned) on nine hits and five walks, striking out two.
The win pushed OSU's record at home this season to 14-5. The victory came against a Cougar club that was batting .342 in its last 11 games and was hitting .327 in Pac-10 play.
"The Pac-10 is tough, and every game in this conference is a big game," OSU coach Pat Casey said. "Anybody is capable of beating anybody. You've got the No. 1 team in the country (Stanford) and teams that have been ranked No. 3, No. 4 - guys are aware of the type of competition you're going to have every game, and how you've got to play to win."
OSU took a 5-0 lead on Barden's three-run homer in the third inning, then saw WSU get within 5-3 in the top of the fifth. Oregon State responded with a seven-run fifth inning that included a two-run double by Barden, then back-to-back homers by Jarvis and Howard.
"It's just going into a game with confidence, doing the job and getting a pitch to hit. I was just in the right spot in the lineup," Barden said of his first five-RBI day as a Beaver. The sophomore third baseman thought a brisk breeze blowing from left to right across the diamond might have aided his homer, which just cleared the fence inside the rightfield foul pole.
Jarvis' homer was his 12th of the season, moving him into a tie for sixth place on OSU's all-time list of single-season leaders. It was also the sophomore first baseman's fifth homer of the season against the Cougars, earlier this year, he'd tied an OSU single-game record with three home runs against WSU in Yakima.
"I don't have any explanation for it," Jarvis said. "I've just gotten some good pitches to hit, stayed on them and hit them good. I don't usually hit any better against any one team."
Jarvis barely missed another homer in the eighth inning, when a drive to left-centerfield hit just to the left of where the fence drops from 12 feet in leftfield to six feet in center.
Barden finished the day 2-for-4 with a homer, a double and five RBIs while Jarvis was 2-for-5 with a homer, a double and two RBIs. Howard, a senior outfielder making his first start since March 4, went 3-for-5 with a homer and a double, Zach Gordon had a pair of doubles and two RBIs in his 2-for-5 day.
Also picking up a pair of hits for OSU were Ingram, Josh Carter and Will Hudson with Hudson driving in a pair of runs. One of Carter's hits was a double, the 38th of his career, giving him sole possession of second place on OSU's all-time list of career leaders.
