STANFORD, CALIF., - The Oregon State women's soccer team fell to No. 1 ranked Stanford 2-0 in its first Pacific-10 Conference road game of the season Friday night. The loss dropped the Beavers season record to 7-5-2 overall and 0-3 in Pac-10 play.
Marcia Wallis scored Stanford's first goal one minute, 46 seconds into the contest off an assist from Marcie Ward and Katherin Harrington. The Cardinal held the 1-0 lead until the 71:12 mark when Callie Withers fired a shot from 15 yards out to increase the lead to 2-0.
"We were beaten tonight by a very, very good Stanford team that is playing well," OSU coach Steve Fennah said. "They had a lot of team speed.
"I'm not too disappointed. I thought we battled well and possessed the ball well at times, we just ran into a very good Stanford team."
Stanford outshot the Beavers 26-3 for the game, including a 16-1 second-half advantage. The Cardinal had eight shots on goal, compared to one for OSU.
"First off, I thought we made a good game of it and competed pretty well," Fennah said. "We had a reasonable amount of possession and created some movement. The second half they took control and we had to do a lot of defending."
OSU will face No. 11 California (8-4-1, 1-2 Pac-10) 1 p.m. Sunday.
