Beavers Eliminated At NCAA Wrestling

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Oregon State's final two entries competing in the NCAA Wrestling Championships were eliminated Friday morning, as 149-pounder Tony Hook and 184-pounder Jed Pennell were beaten in their wrestleback brackets. OSU 125-pounder Michael Delaney, 165-pounder Matt Ellis, 174-pounder Jake Huffman and heavyweight Andy Bowlby had been knocked out of the tournament on Thursday.
The Beavers will finish in a tie for 66th place in the tournament. Oklahoma State leads the team race heading into Saturday's final day of competition.
Hook, a freshman, was beaten by Jake Giamoni of North Carolina State 6-3 in the wrestleback first round. After a scoreless first period, Giamoni chose the bottom and escaped to start the second period, then took Hook down for a 3-0 lead. Giamoni followed with another takedown and Hook another escape to make it 5-2 after two periods. In the third, Hook scored an escape and Giamoni finished with a point for riding time.
Pennell, a junior, lost to Pete Friedl of Illinois 11-1 in the wrestleback second round. Friedl, ranked second in the country as a high schooler, led just 2-0 at the end of the first period, then rode Pennell for the entire second period before lengthening his lead in the third period with an escape, a pair of takedowns, a two-point near-fall, a point for an illegal hold against Pennell and a point for riding time.
