Beavers Lose At No. 14 Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - Tony Hook got the only win for Oregon State as the Beavers were beaten by No. 14 Central Michigan 36-4 in a non-league wrestling dual meet Sunday afternoon. The dual was the first of two on Sunday for OSU (1-2 overall, 1-0 Pacific-10), which wrestles at Eastern Michigan on Sunday evening.
"Central has a real nice team - a good, solid lineup," OSU head coach Joe Wells said.
Against CMU (2-0), Hook returned to the lineup for the first time since being hurt at the Las Vegas Collegiate on Dec. 3. Against Eric Neil, Hook tok a 20-7 major decision for his first victory of the season.
The afternoon's only battle of nationally ranked wrestlers came at heavyweight. Oregon State's Ty Watterson, ranked ninth by Amateur Wrestling News, was beaten by ninth-ranked Bill Stouffer of Central Michigan 12-8. It was Watterson's first loss of the season after seven straight wins.
"Ty had a heck of a match," Wells said. "It was 10-8 for quite a while and anybody could have won it. Their guy wrestled first half of the match and Ty wrestled second half, but he was a little too far behind to catch up. Great heavyweight match, a lot of action."
OSU's other nationally ranked wrestler, 20th-ranked 184-pounder Dan Pitsch, was knocked of by the Chippewa's unranked Russ Vanderheyden. Vanderheyden pinned Pitsch in 3:52, dropping Pitsch's record to 8-5 this season.
Beaver 133-pounder Bobby Pfennigs came close to posting an upset of his own. Pfennigs pushed 20th-ranked Jason Borrelli of Central Michigan before losing a 5-4 decision, and Pfennigs was working on what would have been the winning takedown when time expired.
OSU 125-pounder Eric Stevenson lost a 6-3 decision to 13th-ranked Luke Smith. Smith used a four-point burst over a 30-second span to take the win.
