BOISE, Ida. - Oregon State's Matt Ellis and Dan Pitsch extended their win streaks and Jed Pennell picked up a major decision but the Beavers lost to Boise State 21-13 in Pacific-10 wrestling Friday night at Bronco Gym. The loss ended the regular season for OSU (11-7 overall, 7-3 Pac-10); the Beavers now look toward the Pacific-10 Championships that will be held Feb. 29-March 1 at Arizona State.
On Friday, Boise State (9-3, 4-2) won six of the 10 matches and scored three major decisions to just one for OSU. Eric Stevenson also won for the Beavers, who suffered just their fourth loss in their last 14 dual meets.
"They came out and took it to us, and we gave in to them a bit," OSU head coach Joe Wells said. "They wrestled the basics a little tougher. Now we'll look forward to seeing them at the Pac-10s in a week."
The trio of 165-pounder Ellis, 174-pounder Pennell and 184-pounder Pitsch improved their combined record to 38-2 in those 14 dual meets. All three are ranked No. 1 in the Pac-10 at their weight class.
Ellis, ranked 16th nationally by Amateur Wrestling News and 12th by InterMat, took his 14th straight victory with a 4-3 decision over Russell Brunson. Ellis scored the match's only takedown midway through the first period and later tacked on a point for riding time for the victory; he's now 25-6 this season.
Pitsch, ranked 20th by AWN at 184 pounds, ran his winning streak to 12 with a 5-3 victory over Casey Phelps. Pitsch surrendered an early takedown but managed an escape and takedown in the second period before riding Phelps the entire third period to secure the win and improve to 17-8 on the season.
Pennell, ranked 15th by AWN and 17th by IM at 174 pounds, beat Jonathan Carlisle 10-1 for Pennell's 13th win in his last 14 matches; his only loss during that time came when he moved up to 184 pounds for a meet when Pitsch was ill. Pennell led just 1-0 after two periods but scored a takedown and three two-point near-falls during a third-period scoring surge. Pennell is now 22-6 with six pins this season.
Stevenson bumped his record to 16-11 with five pins at 125 pounds by beating Clint Wolfley 5-3 in the night's first match, scoring an early takedown to take control. Stevenson has won eight of his last 11 matches.
OSU suffered an upset at 149 pounds where Tony Hook, ranked 20th by AWN and second in the Pac-10, lost a major decision to Nick Budeski of Boise State 17-6. Hook, who had a seven-match winning streak end, fell to 15-7 this season while Budeski is now 7-16.
There was a minor upset at heavyweight, where Boise State's Jacob McGinnis beat Jamie Rakevich 2-1. Rakevich was ranked second in the Pac-10 and McGinnis third going into the match.
Beaver 197-pounder Jed Lowe returned to the lineup for the first time since Dec. 29 but was beaten by Boise State's K.C. Walsh 13-6. Walsh is ranked ninth nationally by AWN.
